Environmental Theatre

UC Merced students create many environmental theatre projects, including:

Fire, Water, Poison, Hope: California in 2023

An original play written, acted, designed, and produced by UC Merced students, and based on interviews conducted with folks on the frontlines of environmental injustice in the San Joaquin Valley and Sierra. The play was produced by students in the fall 2023 Theatre and Ecology class, and presented at Playhouse Merced and on campus for almost 200 people. A film of the play can be viewed here.

Shakespeare in Yosemite

Since 2017, this annual festival puts on a new, heavily adapted, musical version of a Shakespeare play for free in Yosemite National Park and on campus every April for Earth Day. Many UC Merced students get involved as actors, musicians, designers, PR team members, and more. Their YouTube Channel has videos of productions beignning in 2021, and you can also follow them on Instagram and TikTok @yosemiteshakesÂ
