April 15, 2024
Professor Jones with Student Success Interns Daisy Flores-Mota and Emily Reyes

UC Merced professor and Environmental Humanities Program Coordinator Bristin Scalzo Jones was awarded a $10,000 Pathways Step Grant to help improve recruitment and retention for two UC Merced programs: Environmental Humanities (EH) and Spanish. This competitive grant offered through the Modern Language Association (MLA) aims to bolster the recruitment, retention, and career readiness of undergraduate students, especially students of color, first-generation college students, and Pell Grant recipients.

This grant will provide opportunities for the Environmental Humanities and Spanish programs to collaborate with student organizations, host engaging events, and fund two student internship positions over the summer.

Additionally, Professor Jones and the student interns will work with the Student Career Center to integrate career preparation into individual courses and interview professionals in Environmental Humanities and Spanish to gain better information regarding career trajectories and preparation.

Professor Jones will present the results of this grant in New Orleans at the MLA Annual Convention in January 2025. You can learn more about the MLA Pathways Step Grant here: https://news.mla.hcommons.org/2024/04/15/mla-announces-inaugural-group-o...

Congratulations, Professor Jones!
