Though our UC Merced Environmental Humanities program is the first of its kind in the UC system, there are other related programs available across the UCs. These programs are outlined by The Daily Bruin’s article “‘A broader view’: How science communication is taught across the UC.”
Our very own Dr. Bristin Jones was featured in the article, where she shared, “Our main issue in environmentalism today is a communication issue. I see environmental humanities as the missing link – and science communication more generally as the missing link – between having great environmental research and getting it implemented.” By including this in their article, The Daily Bruin encapsulates the purpose of UC Merced’s newest program, Environmental Humanities, which aims to train science communicators that will effectively breach the gap between science-related topics and the public.
The article makes it clear that, though taught differently, all these UC programs have the same goal—to spread scientific literacy. This opens the door for possible collaboration between these programs. For example, students who have completed undergraduate training in science communication may be directed toward a graduate program, such as UC Santa Cruz’s Master’s Program.
